CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI REGIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM

 

JOB TITLE:       

Full-Time Children’s Specialist (Brandon Public Library, Brandon, MS)

 

REPORTS TO:  

Youth Services Supervisor

 

The Central Mississippi Regional Library System (CMRLS) has an opening for a full-time Children’s Specialist to fill a 40-hour weekly position at the Brandon Public Library in Brandon, Mississippi.

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:  An Associate’s Degree in Education or Early Childhood Development is required. Knowledge of children’s literature, current library practices, and technology is preferred. A minimum of two to three years of work experience with children is required. Good organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to deal effectively with the public and other employees. Computer literacy and good communication skills are a must.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists in reading reviews and selecting materials for the youth collection.
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in the library profession.
  • Assists in scheduling, planning, and conducting youth programming in the branch library with guidelines from the Branch Manager, Youth Services Supervisor, and the Coordinator of Programming.
  • Assists in scheduling, planning, and conducting children’s programs for outreach to the day-cares, schools, and other community groups with guidelines from the Branch Manager, Youth Services Supervisor, and the Coordinator of Programming.
  • Assists Children in the use of the library and its resources. Provides reference services for youth.
  • Assists parents and other adults in selecting appropriate youth materials.
  • Conducts library tours and provides programming for visiting classes.
  • Assists Branch Manager and/or Youth Services Supervisor in representing the library system at schools, community groups or professional associations.
  • Assists in working at the Circulation desk.
  • Assists in maintaining statistical records of department use and program attendance.
  • Participates as a member of the Youth Services Committee.
  • Cooperates as a team member with all library staff in performing any professional or nonprofessional duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations.

 

SALARY:  $20,800.00 yearly with benefits (state retirement plan, state health and life insurance, and dental insurance).
